In a move that’s dividing the renewable energy sector, President Trump announced 15% tariffs on Chinese solar panels and components today. The policy, framed as protecting U.S. energy independence, comes as domestic solar installations hit record highs. Industry analysts predict the tariffs could:
- Increase residential solar installation costs by 1,500−3,000
- Delay 12-18GW of planned solar projects
- Benefit U.S. manufacturers like First Solar
The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) called the decision “a major setback for clean energy,” while domestic manufacturers applauded the move. Chinese solar giant JinkoSolar saw its U.S.-listed shares drop 9% in pre-market trading.
Policy Details:
- Tariffs take effect September 15, 2025
- Covers panels, inverters and mounting systems
- 5% tariff reduction for panels with >50% U.S.-made components
- 2-year exemption for projects already permitted.
